On July 14, I will travel with two other colleagues and thirty-five amazing students from the United States to China. The Confucius Institute at the University of Memphis along with the International Confucius Institute Office in Beijing are serving as the hosts for this amazing journey!

Students will travel from various cities across the United States to L.A. and then to Seoul, Korea and then to Beijing. We will spend four action packed days in Beijing at Beijing Language International School meeting students, participating in language arts classes, and visiting historic sites in and around Beijing.

On July 19, we will travel from Beijing to the Yunnan province in southwest China. Yunnan is known to the world as 'Shangri-La', an imaginary utopia for which all people yearn, depicted in James Hilton's famous novel, Shangri-La.

The Yunnan province is home to 44,000,000 people representing 26 ethnic groups. Of all of China's provinces, Yunnan has the greatest number and most concentrated population of ethnic minority groups. Its rich ethnic diversity and multicultural history make Yunnan a special and extraordinary place.

China has 23 provinces, four municipalities directly under the Central Government, five autonomous regions and two special administrative regions. There are 56 ethnic groups in China. The Han, make up the overwhelming majority of the population.

I look forward to the next three weeks as we explore Beijing and Yunnan! Won't you join us on our journey?
